How to Protect against Rent Scams!
How to Protect against Rent Scams!
At Black River Property Preservation, we want your search for a home in Elyria or Lorain to be safe and successful. Rental fraud is on the rise, often targeting people through social media and "too good to be true" listings. Use this guide to protect yourself and your money.
The "Hijacked" Listing: Scammers copy photos and descriptions from a real professional listing (like ours!) and repost them on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist with their own contact info and a much lower price.
The "Out of Town" Landlord: The "owner" claims they are currently out of the country for missionary work, military service, or a family emergency. They promise to mail you the keys once you wire the deposit. Spoiler: The keys never arrive.
The "Phantom" Property: A listing for a home that doesn't exist, is actually a vacation rental, or is currently occupied by someone not looking to move.
The Credit Check "Affiliate" Scam: A "landlord" asks you to click a specific link to get a "free" or "$1" credit report before they will show you the house. These links often sign you up for expensive monthly subscriptions or steal your identity.
Urgency & Pressure: They insist you must pay "right now" or the house will be gone in an hour.
No In-Person Tour: They make excuses why you can’t see the inside of the home (e.g., "the current tenant has COVID" or "I lost the key and am getting a new one").
Suspiciously Low Rent: If a beautiful 3-bedroom home in Elyria is listed for $500 below the market average, it is almost certainly a scam.
Verify the Owner: In Ohio, you can check property ownership for free via the Lorain County Auditor’s website. If the person you are talking to doesn't match the record or the management company listed, walk away.
Google the Address: Copy and paste the address into a search engine. If you see the same house listed on another site for a different price or with a different company's watermark on the photos, it’s a scam.
Never Pay Before a Tour: Never send an application fee or deposit until you have physically walked through the interior of the property.
Meet the Manager: A legitimate property manager in Elyria/Lorain will always attend the tours. Ask for a business card and verify their website.
Read the Lease: Scammers often provide "vague" or one-page leases. A professional lease will be detailed and compliant with Ohio Landlord-Tenant Law.
